Gary O’Neil expressed great satisfaction with Julio Enciso’s return to Ipswich Town, marking the Paraguayan playmaker’s second spell at the club in style.
The 22-year-old completed his £26million transfer from Strasbourg on Monday, linking up once again with O’Neil and rejoining the side where he previously spent time on loan.
Handed an immediate starting role, the South American delivered a lively performance during Saturday’s opening-day victory by a 2-1 margin at Portman Road against Sunderland. He supplied the assist for the opening goal, came close to scoring with an impressive piece of skill, and pushed himself to the limit before being forced off with cramp.
O’Neil praised the acquisition, describing him as an exceptional talent and explaining the club’s efforts to secure his signature. The manager noted that while many number 10s possess creative ability, few show the same work-rate and defensive willingness that Enciso demonstrates. O’Neil revealed he had focused on his defensive awareness during their time together at Strasbourg, and the player did a commendable job preventing Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka from controlling the game.
The manager highlighted one particular moment where Enciso beat two opponents and found himself bearing down on goal, yet chose to pass to a teammate rather than shoot. He acknowledged that considerable development work remains, as the player is not yet fully match-fit, but expects him to build up his conditioning alongside his new teammates.
O’Neil described the impact Enciso made on his debut as significant, noting his ability to change games while also fulfilling his defensive responsibilities as part of the team unit.
Seven summer arrivals featured in the starting lineup, though O’Neil was quick to acknowledge the contribution of players already at the club. He pointed to solid performances from Jacob Greaves, Leif Davis, and captain Dara O’Shea, as well as useful contributions from substitutes Chuba Akpom, Kasey McAteer, and Sindre Walle Egeli.
